Are you aware that your words have the power to bless or to curse, to heal or to harm, to break down or to build up? Which words will you choose to believe and allow to influence your life?
Words have the ability to create. God didn’t just think the world into existence, even though He could’ve easily done so. He chose to speak it. Why? Because I believe He desired to illustrate the beauty of verbal declaration and its effects.
Since we are made in the image of God, and if God is able to speak life through His words, then we too have the capability as well. We use our breath to speak words, the very breath that He first breathed into us.
John 1:1 states, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,” which reveals that speaking, or even the capability to formulate a word would not be possible without God, because the Word was God. When we read the word of God, we are not reading a book that is dead, we are reading a book that is alive and active – the living, breathing, word of God (Hebrews 4:12)! The most powerful word is the word of God because the word of God made flesh is Jesus.
Jesus is the Ultimate Communicator, who not only is the Word, but He has given us His love letter, the Bible to help us in every situation and circumstance. To all those who decide to soak themselves within the majestic words of the Bible and accept Jesus into their life, will only then understand the weight of its promises. God communicates His love and truth to me through the divine Scriptures, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17). Speak the promises of God over your life. Hold them close to your heart.
Decree and declare them over every situation and moment, over every good moment and over every not so good moment. Your words produce consequences. King Solomon, in the book of Proverbs, warns that, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (18:21). Train your tongue to speak life. Be very mindful of what you talk about, about what you fill your mind with. Are you depositing praise and worship, affirmation, prophetic declarations of life or are you depositing hateful words, negativity, gossip, and slander over yourself and others? Your words create an investment and will either be an asset to your future or a liability.
Which words are your framing your world with? Hebrews 11:3 says that, “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”May we be conscious of what we are speaking and how the Word of God should be the ultimate that takes precedence over every word that we speak over our lives.
Look at your words like a bank deposit. Before it can come out of your mouth though, it needs to first go into her head, your mind. So what thoughts are you depositing which will then reach your mouth? If you think on what is true and honorable, you will also speak what is true and honorable (Philippians 4:8).
Don’t allow any negative words spoken over you to control you. If you’ve been hurt by words, run to the Word that heals all your hurts. Instead of talking about how big your problems are all the time, talk about how big your God is all the time. He is the only One trustworthy with your pain, your heart, your hurts, and your desires. Talk with Him in prayer, exchanging words of praise to your Savior. Honor Him with the words of your mouth and the meditations of your heart, and may it be found acceptable in His sight (Psalm 19:14).
The next time you catch yourself saying statements like, “I’m so fat”, “I’m so ugly”, “No one will ever love me”, “I’ll always stay single,” stop and rebuke those words. Because what you just did is speak a curse against yourself. Those words can keep you chained and stuck in a cycle that hinders blessings of God over your life. Negative words include verbal abuse through bullying, gossip, slander, and even complaining, murmuring and whining. When and if you're tempted to complain or whine, resist the temptation & turn your curses into blessings & your words of death into life.
Your words can either positively or negatively impact someone else’s life, let alone your own. Reverse any negative ones you or others have spoken over you by declaring and speaking life over yourself:
I am a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17)!
I am an heir through God (Galatians 4:7)!
I am royalty, set apart for such a time as this (Esther 4:14)!
I am more than a conqueror through Christ Jesus (Romans 8:37)!
I am able to do all things through Christ who gives you strength (Phil. 4:13)!
Because He is, You are.

The Bible is God's written Word brought to life, and prayer is spoken word, dialogue with the Lord brought to life. We can communicate with the Lord through prayer, which is a two-way conversation and that a firm, spirit filled connection. Trust that as it says in Psalm 66:19 that, “…God has surely listened and heard [your] voice in prayer.” As I speak, I know He listens.
God breathed out His life upon the world. When I am filled with His spirit, I am no longer talking, for He speaks through me. I pray that my words always nurtures and loves, just as Jesus would communicate. His pure and perfect words bring the life, revitalizing my spirit. As James 1:19 so eloquently states, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,” I aspire to glorify God through His perfect, unchanging commands.
Words of life will only stem forth from a heart that is full of life. Jesus is Truth and He is like a purifying fire, revealing our heart’s motives, because out of the heart the mouth speaks (Luke 6:45). Fill your heart with the word of God, so that your mouth will overflow with His words! Our words are full of blessing when the heart is full of blessing. So if we fill our hearts with the love of Christ, only truth and purity can come out of our mouths.
When you don’t know what to say, are at a loss for words, or can’t seem to put together the right words, declare God’s perfect words over your life. If you ask Him to, God will even put His words in your mouth just as He did with Moses & Aaron; He will speak to you and through you. He will be your mouthpiece, so you can speak to others and their lives about Him and His promises for them, “For it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you” (Exodus 4:12).
God knows your thoughts and true hearts motive even if you don’t feel you have the words to speak. Open your mouth in faith even if the only words you can muster to say are, "Thank you, Lord" and watch and see how He will move in your life.
God listens to each and every word you say. Make your words count. May it touch His heart just as much as His Word touches yours. Here is a prayer I seek to pray daily, and as you pray it too, my hope is that you would choose to speak life, because what you speak, you will become:
Dear God,
May my words be just and true. May I honor You in all that I do. Make my heart pure and new. And may I make room for more of You.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen
